  • December and May Degree Graduates: Please note that any student expecting to graduate in December 2011 must submit a degree application to Karen Sullivan no later than October. May 2012 graduates must submit an application by February. Degree applications can be found in the Paralegal Studies brochure holder in the hall outside the Department. Students also may email Karen directly at KSullivan@hartford.edu to request the form; please include your mailing address in the email.
  • December and May Certificate Graduates: Must submit an Application for Certificate form to University Studies by October for December graduates and by March for May graduates. The form can be found in the "Current Students" section of the website under "Certificate Evaluation Request" and filed electronically. The Program will hold a Graduation celebration for September 2011 and December 2011 graduates in mid-January. More information to follow.
  • Foreclosure Clinic Training:There will be a once a semester training session to work at future foreclosure clinics on Sat., October 8th from 9:00a.m. to 10:30a.m. in the United Technologies Building room 320. You must attend the training to work at the clinics. This training is also recommended as a refresher for those who have not worked at the clinic recently since some of the documents for mediation have changed. This may be the only training this Fall. RSVP required to Laura Main at main@hartford.edu.
  • Foreclosure Clinics co-sponsored by the University of Hartford and CT Fair Housing Agency: On December 20th the Clinic will have its 3 year anniversary! Thank you to everyone who helped start the clinic and kept it running for 3 years! Hundreds of homeowners have stayed in their homes thanks to you! Foreclosure clinics are being the third Tuesday of each month through June 2012 in which Paralegal Studies students, graduates and alumni may volunteer to assist individual homeowners navigate the court foreclosure process. You must be trained prior to volunteering at the clinics. Clinics are held the University High School of Science & Engineering (right here on our UofH campus) from 5:30-8:00p.m. Please rsvp to Laura Main at main@hartford.edu if you can volunteer at one of the clinics.   • Saturdayterm session names changed Saturdayterm names have changed so that the summer term is now Saturdayterm 1. Saturdayterm 2 is in the Fall, Saturdayterm 3 in the Winter and Saturdayterm 4 in the Spring.
  • Master Department schedule of classes available:The Master Schedule for the Department is attached and is also available on the Paralegal Studies table in Auerbach. Please feel free to pick up a copy and plan out your degree.
  • Resume Writing Workshop: There will be a resume writing workshop on Thurs., October 27th in GSU 335 from 5:30-8:00p.m. for all paralegal students (pre-registration required). This workshop will give you the opportunity to bring along your updated paralegal specific resume and have it reviewed by recruiters, legal HR managers, working paralegals and attorneys. Take the time now to update your resume using the sample paralegal resumes and information contained in the "Job Search Guide for Paralegal Studies". To obtain a copy of the Guide please e-mail Deb Boyle at dboyle@hartford.edu and she will send you an electronic copy.   • Student Paralegal Association: The Association held several very successful events this past Spring. They sponsored a panel of paralegal graduates to discuss their non-traditional paralegal jobs. In addition, they conducted a professional clothing drive for Dress for Success and collected 5 handbags, 8 pairs of shoes and 9 suits. The annual book club event featured the book "Controversial Court Cases I and II" and author Attorney Regina Forker discussed some of the key court cases in Connecticut. The Association also hosted a social networking seminar. The Student Paralegal Association Leadership Award was given to Chanel Johnson for her years of commitment to the Association. Fall events will include a resume writing seminar, a seminar on privacy and social networking, a trip to hear oral argument at the CT Supreme Court (including a tour of the court by a Supreme Court judge) and a Foodshare Collection drive.   • Pro Bono Opportunities for Paralegal Students: There is currently tremendous need for students to assist with Pro Bono Projects. Attached is an article describing some of those needs with CT Fair Housing Agency, the Department of Banking, CT Bar Association, Statewide Legal Services, The Children's Law Center of Connecticut and The Center for Children Advocacy.
  • Other ways to get involved: Attend a CT Bar Association reception to benefit the Connecticut Innocence Fund - Wed., Oct. 12th at 6:00p.m. This event is sponsored by the Paralegal Committee of the Bar. Pick up a registration form on table outside Paralegal Studies. Attend the Central CT Paralegal Assoc. Continuing Legal Education Seminar - Thurs., Nov. 3rd from 8:00-4:00. This is a full day CLE that is only $59 for student members (including lunch!). Pick up a registration form on table outside Paralegal Studies. Volunteer at the Homeowners Mortgage Assistance Event on Tues., Nov. 15th from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the CT Convention Center.   • Congratulations:
    • Laura Main and Loretta Martina who were selected from all University of Hartford students to be awarded the Student Leadership Award for their leadership work at the Foreclosure Prevention Clinics.
    • Brandon Angell, Paralegal Studies graduate, for being one of the first paralegals in the country (and Connecticut) to pass the pilot test of the NFPA Paralegal CORE Competency Exam and earn the designation Core Registered Paralegal (CRP).
    • Evelyn Navarro for being selected to participate in the ADVANCE: Professional Skills Workshop for Women on campus.
  • On June 2nd the Department held a celebration for May graduates of the program. Commencement speaker was Jennifer Sanborn, former Director of the Women's Education and Leadership Fund, who discussed how our own story and the stories of those around us hold the greatest potential for inspiration.
