Getting selected for a highly competitive summer internship at ABC television’s Good Morning America is a tremendous accomplishment.
But that was only the beginning of Kristen Kucks’ achievements this past summer.

Kucks, a senior in the University of Hartford’s School of Communication, and her two teammates also won the first-ever “Good Morning America Intern Challenge.”
Kucks was assigned to Good Morning America (GMA) Weekend Edition. During the summer, GMA Weekend Edition challenged its interns to a competition in which they were asked to produce videos about their internship experiences. The interns divided into four teams, and they were told that the winning team’s video would air nationally on the weekend program.
The panel of producers who judged the competition awarded first place to the video from “Team Two,” which consisted of Kucks; Lindsay Lindenbaum of Washington University in St. Louis; and Trisha Cox of Indiana University.
And so, on Sunday, Aug. 5, Kucks, Lindenbaum, and Cox found themselves interviewed live on GMA Weekend, and their video was broadcast to a national audience.

Kucks was involved in scripting, directing, and editing the video, which is just under three minutes long. Cox did most of the talking and acting in the video, but Kucks (wearing a blue shirt) does appear briefly in several scenes.
“Just with this one project, I got to experience all the elements of TV production and what needs to go into a piece from start to finish,” Kucks said. “The project helped bring together all of the things I had learned throughout the entire summer.”
Kucks, who is from Jersey City, N.J., is a communication major with an emphasis in journalism and public relations. In addition to her internship at Good Morning America, she has also interned and volunteered in the communication office of FOODSHARE. After graduating, Kucks is hoping to continue studying journalism in graduate school.
