College of Education, Nursing
and Health Professions

One of the most rewarding feelings in life is to know you are using your skills and talents to help improve
someone else's life. What can compare to the look on a child's face when he or she gets the concept you've been
explaining. Or helping someone overcome a difficult problem. And what can rival the satisfaction of participating
in the health care for an injured or ill person?
The College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions offers students opportunities to make a difference in the
lives of others. The College offers programs of study in teacher preparation, human services and allied health
professions. And you'll have plenty of opportunity to put what you've learned into practice.
Fieldwork including clinical experiences in local health care settings, teaching in urban and suburban schools
(including the University of Hartford Magnet School) and assisting individuals in human service agencies are
important parts of the programs offered by the college.
*Department of Nursing - Nursing is not available as an undergraduate major leading to a bachelor's degree and to licensure as an RN. The Department of Nursing offers an advanced program to licensed and practicing registered nurses who wish to obtain a B.S.N. degree. This program is not open to traditional first-year or transfer students but only to those who are already RNs.

Teacher Preparation Programs
Ask successful people about their school years, and they will tell you about those teachers who made a significant
difference in their lives or whose influence was life-altering. Teachers open the minds of their students to unfamiliar
information and challenging concepts. Teachers help students gain confidence and overcome obstacles. Teachers become role
models.
If your career goals combine idealistic motivation with academic and practical skills, you are a strong candidate for a
career in teaching. For those ambitious and dedicated future teachers who wish to make a difference in the lives of children
and young students, the University of Hartford's Division of Education offers degree programs in early childhood, elementary,
and secondary english education, and integrated special education/elementary education dual majors.
Opportunities for Practical Experience
Central to the University of Hartford teacher preparation programs is the opportunity
to learn teaching skills while working in a variety of educational settings.
Educational Main Street
As an education student at the University of Hartford, you will be able to participate in the ground-breaking Educational Main
Street (EMS) project, serving as a tutor or class assistant in special EMS programs. Through the Educational Main Street project,
the University of Hartford and five diverse local schools collaborate on an integrated curriculum that extends from kindergarten
through graduate school. Among the purposes of the program is to minimize the barriers that traditionally exist among various
races; among elementary, middle, secondary, and university faculty; and between public and private schools.
Computer Resource Center
Students are encouraged to learn more about the major role of computers in education. In the specially staffed Computer Resource
Center, you will be able to preview the latest educational software and develop your proficiency in using state-of-the-art
computer hardware. You will have easy access to the University's extensive computer resources through the many terminals located
throughout the campus.
The Magnet School
On September 4, 2001, the University opened the doors of its innovative magnet school, believed to be the nation's first public
elementary school built on a private university campus. Its benefits are two-fold: the magnet school has access to the University's
vast resources, while providing a hands-on "learning laboratory" for students studying education and related fields. Based on
Harvard University professor Howard Gardener's theory on multiple intelligences, the curriculum at the magnet school allows
children to explore different "styles" of learning. University students have ample opportunity to participate in magnet school
activities and learn from their interaction with students, teachers, parents and staff.
"Getting practical experience in a daycare center helped me know that I'm studying the right thing."--Kaitlyn Algers, Class of 2001
Accredited Certification Options
If you plan to work toward teacher certification, you may choose from several certification options. The Division of Education
offers majors leading to certification in early childhood, elementary, secondary English, secondary mathematics, and integrated elementary/special
education. If you elect a teacher certification program, you will also select a subject area major. Except in the case of
both secondary English and mathematics education majors, you may choose any department at the University for your subject area major, such as English,
history, or psychology. Or you may contract for an interdisciplinary major, combining courses from several related fields.
Certification programs are accredited by the key governing organizations in the field of education. All of the University's
certification programs have been approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the Connecticut
Department of Education, and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

Health Professions

More jobs are available in the health care industry than ever before! Technological advances in medical diagnosis and treatment have created
a need for skilled technicians and therapists. Health care workers use their skills to improve upon the quality of life for patients
of all ages.
The University of Hartford offers several programs which are designed to give students the course background and clinical training
necessary to secure a position in the healthcare industry. In addition to a well-balanced curriculum of core courses, health care
students gain practical experience both on campus, in the University's state-of-the-art laboratories, and off campus, in hospitals and
medical centers throughout the greater Hartford area. Career opportunities are not limited to hospitals and labs. Many health care
professionals put their expertise to work in private practices, insurance companies, industrial firms, school systems and more!
Students enrolled in any of the programs offered by the Division of Health Professions have both on-campus and off-campus
opportunities to work in program-specific settings. Practical, hands-on learning is a critical part of professional health care
education at the University of Hartford.

Pre-Medical Professions Advising

If you are interested in pursuing a career in medicine, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, veterinary medicine, or other health fields,
the University of Hartford is especially prepared to give you the help you need.
We will assist you in preparing for admission to medically related professional schools, while completing your undergraduate major
of choice. Although many premed students major in biology, chemistry, the chemistry-biology joint program, or health science, you may
select any departmental major as long as you satisfy the pre-professional school requirements. Whether you are majoring in biology,
English, or engineering, we provide a structured academic program that will prepare you for further professional studies. Successful
admission to medical school or other professional schools requires applicants to do well in the courses associated with their majors
and in a specific set of courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
Enrollment in our Premedical Advising Program will optimize your chances of successful entrance into a professional school. You can
enter this special program in two ways: either by demonstrating outstanding achievement in high school or through outstanding performance
in your first semester at the University of Hartford.
The Advising Program for Premedical Professions offers students support and assistance in assessing and preparing for admission tests as
well as guidance throughout the application process. Because the process leading to acceptance in a doctoral program requires mastery of complex
skills, the Advising Program provides assistance with public speaking, test taking, and interviewing. You will receive both tutoring and
mentoring and assistance in securing internship opportunities and building a portfolio.
Health Science Pre-professional Program

The University of Hartford is affiliated with several professional medical schools, offering a unique opportunity for students who
wish to pursue careers in chiropractic medicine, dentistry, optometry, or podiatry. Through combined degree programs, you can earn
a Bachelor of Science and a Doctorate in just seven years or less. Students in this program complete their fourth-year requirements
for the bachelor's degree during their first year at an affiliated professional institution.
These are challenging programs, and admission is highly competitive. However, if you have the academic strength, the personal
motivation, and the desire to have a career in one of these fields, this program provides you with an excellent opportunity!
