Art History

Are you moved by the physical beauty of the world around you whether it is an exquisite sculpture, a gothic
cathedral, or a piece of fine furniture? A major in Art History at the University of Hartford will give
you an opportunity to explore these areas in depth, in their cultural and historical contexts.
Core courses, such as European Baroque Art and Early American Art, revolve around European and American
traditions of painting, sculpture, and architecture, and how these things evolved in the modern world.
You'll also have opportunities to study Far Eastern and African art, as well as the history of design,
fashion, photography, women's art, and prints and illustrations. One of the strongest aspects of the
program is the opportunity to experience some of the traditional art forms firsthand,
through study trips to Europe conducted by the department faculty. Local museums provide another
resource, where you can apply for career-oriented internships. You'll learn to analyze works
of art by developing your observation, reading, and writing skills which are essential in almost any
career. Art History majors can become curators or work in art galleries, advertising and design
firms, or the fashion or tourism industries. Or perhaps you'll want to continue your studies in a graduate program.
The University library's collection of more than 14,000 volumes on art and the department's collection
of more than 85,000 slides will provide you with valuable tools for research. The resources of local
museums and arts institutions are frequently incorporated into course work and provide the setting for
career-oriented internships.
