Are you interested in theoretical and applied computer science? This program, offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, will provide you with a strong foundation in software design, machine architecture, and operating systems. From there, you will delve into an in-depth study in your own area of interest, choosing from such topics as graphics, artificial intelligence, database management, operating systems, networked systems, software engineering, or Internet programming and web technologies.

Computer Science at the University of Hartford is designed to help you excel in both academic and the industrial worlds by stressing the fundamentals and providing a solid foundation to advanced application areas. We offer courses in almost every area of computer science, taught by professionals who are in the forefront of their fields. You will be provided with numerous opportunities to put your skills to work before you graduate through internships and cooperative education experience. This combination of theoretical education and practical experience will give you the competitive edge in the job market.

As a computer science major, you will begin your program by studying the fundamentals of computer science and math. Building on this strong foundation, you can then elect courses in particular areas of interest, choosing from introductory and advanced courses such as networking, UNIX internals, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, distributed computing, algorithm analysis and database design.

Your computer science degree can serve as your passport to almost anywhere you want to go, since virtually every industry employs computer science professionals. Our graduates have gone on to careers as Webmasters or in Software Engineering, Computer Programming, Database Analysis, Network Administration, Internet Service Provision, Computer Aided Design, and Network Security. Others have pursued careers in education or indirectly related professions such as law or medicine, and some have gone on to graduate school.

Computer Laboratory
Through the Computer Science Laboratory, you will have easy access to Sun SPARC workstations running UNIX and Pentium machines running Windows and LINUX. These networks are also interconnected with the University's campus network, so you can take advantage of a complete range of computer resources from any machine in the laboratory. The University is connected to the Internet via high-speed T3 connection.

Co-Op Program
To help you gain the practical experience you need to succeed in the computer industry, the University of Hartford offers numerous cooperative education opportunities. As a co-op student, you will supplement your in-the-classroom studies with on-the-job training. In addition to getting paid for your work, you will receive academic credit. This experience can also prove professionally rewarding, as evidenced by the fact that more than 80 percent of our co-op students receive job offers from the companies where they are working.
