English

There is always a need for people with an education in literature and writing. You'll hone critical thinking and analytical skills as an English major at the University of Hartford. In small classes, you'll examine literature and criticism from a variety of perspectives and learn how to articulate your responses. You'll study the familiar genres of poetry, fiction and drama, as well as emerging forms of cyber-publications. If you're interested in creating literature, as well as studying existing work, you'll find ample opportunity here.

In addition to courses in all aspects of creative writing, you can participate in a weekly writers' workshop and submit to a variety of campus publications, including the Department's magazine, Aerie. As an English major, you may be eligible for the Department's honors program, as well as the yearly seminar of the College's Humanities Center. You can supplement your courses with an internship, enabling you to earn both academic credit and professional experience. These special programs offer you an opportunity to meet other students who share your desire to develop as both a critical reader and an accomplished writer.

A major in English opens up a multitude of career possibilities, such as law, journalism, and education. This program will also prepare you for continued studies in graduate school.
