Modern Languages and Cultures

There is no doubt that the world is becoming more global every day. The demand in the workplace for people who are fluent in more than one language is increasing. If you're interested in international business or working overseas, or want to work with non-native speaking populations here in the U.S., a major in International Languages and Cultures is the way to go.

The Department offers two program options: an in-depth study of one language, along with its literature and culture, or a combination of study in more than one language. Courses offered each semester include French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Hebrew. The Department of Modern Languages offers flexible Major and Minor options which enable students to select any one of the four languages as their primary area of concentration, or to combine two or moreof them. The department is also proud to sponsor various Study Abroad programs in several countries. Indeed, study abroad is an integral part of the department's commitment to offer students a well-rounded and meaningful educational experience. For this reason, study abroad is fully integrated in the major curricular requirements.

The flexibility of this program also makes it ideal for students who want to major or minor in another area of study, multiplying their career options. Combine a major in Business with a minor in Japanese for a career in international business or manufacturing. Or combine a major in Art History with a minor in Italian. Job opportunities exist in interpreting and translating and in many other fields such as business, civil service, education, and tourism.
