Physics

Over the years, physicists have made the seemingly impossible not only impossible but practical from
the power of light to the glory of flight. We owe advances in aerospace, lasers, and DNA to the
discipline of physics. Physicists have also answered many questions about our world, from the inner
core of the earth to the outer boundaries of space.
The Physics Department at the University of Hartford offers a unique approach to the study of physics,
by giving undergraduate students the opportunity to learn by doing an opportunity often reserved for
graduate students in other universities. As a physics student, you will perform research experiments,
interact with dedicated professors, and work alongside peers in small classroom environments. In
addition, our laboratories contain some of the finest equipment available for contemporary research.
Physics programs at the University of Hartford give students unparalleled opportunity for hands-on
experience in a wide range of experimental areas. These include optics, theoretical physics, materials
science, computational physics, foundations of quantum mechanics, educational physics, and physics
of the human body.
Bachelor of Science (B.S.)
The Bachelor of Science program is an intensive program requiring a heavy course load in math
and science, in addition to general education requirements. The B.S. program prepares specialists
for employment in industry or for advanced graduate training in physics. Some of our students
have gone onto well-known graduate schools such as Oxford University and Johns Hopkins University.
Society of Physics Students
The Department sponsors an active, award-winning chapter of this national physics society. The
chapter hosts lectures, films, and trips to places of special interest. Recent trips have included
visits to the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and to physics
colloquia at Yale.
