Political Economy

Examine the relationship between politics and economics in this fascinating interdisciplinary
major. Learn how public policies are made and why they are broken. Probe the controversies
surrounding attempts by any government to regulate the economy, and debate the social issues
that arise from that regulation.
To help you stretch beyond the boundaries of any one area of study, this program is led
by a faculty committee made up of economists, political scientists, and historians. You will
learn to examine all sides of the issues through such challenging courses as Democracy,
Socialism, and Capitalism; Libertarian Political Economy; Industrialization in the Non-Western
World; Comparative Economic Systems; International Relations; and Politics of the Third World.
Study with the faculty of the Department of Politics and Government and with the faculty of the
Economics Department of the Barney School of Business.
Your broad-based understanding of economics and politics can springboard you to challenging
advanced study in a specialized area. Or you can put your knowledge of economic and political
systems to work in many different fields including business, public administration, law, the
foreign service, and education.
