Rhetoric and Professional Writing
In this age of information, those who can offer an employer writing skills and an in-depth understanding of a particular subject are highly in demand. The University of Hartford's Rhetoric and Professional Writing program (RPW) provides you with an opportunity to develop both the technical competence and the skills you need to succeed in this growing field.
Small classes—usually 15 students or fewer—provide you with individualized attention and instruction to promote student development and build teacher/student relations. Most RPW courses are taught in networked computer classrooms, allowing for hands-on work on projects using programs such as Adobe InDesign. Many classes have also engaged in collaborative projects with local organizations, for example, public television affiliates, theater groups, and manufacturers.
As a major, you will choose a minor or a second major to strengthen your training in another field. Additionally, you will be required to take a Capstone course in which you create a portfolio of your work. These portfolios become a valuable tool for showcasing your writing abilities to potential employers.
Engineering, scientific, industrial, nonprofit, research, and governmental organizations across the country employ professional and technical writers. You'll find these writers tackling a variety of responsibilities at such companies as AT&T, Compaq, Apple, IBM, and Westinghouse Electric. Professional and technical writers might be involved in producing technical reports, computer manuals, brochures, proposals, technical specifications, educational and training materials, and marketing or public relations releases. Or they may serve as researchers, as managers of writing projects, or as liaisons among the research production and document design departments of organizations.
