Human Services

If you enjoy working with and helping people, a degree in Human Services can prepare you for a rewarding career helping people to lead fuller lives. In this program, you will acquire the conceptual knowledge and the practical skills you need to analyze and intervene in a variety of situations—from the remediation of problems to advocating for change in systems that affect the lives of clients. You'll be exposed to courses in sociology and psychology, as well as specific courses in human services, such as Helping Skills and Interpersonal Relations, and People in Systems. With the help of your advisor, you will also choose an area of concentration, like counseling, childcare, adolescence, or family studies. And, you'll serve two internships in the greater Hartford community that correspond to your chosen area, where you'll benefit from hands-on training.

Your Bachelor of Science in Human Services can prepare you for fulfilling career in a wide variety of settings. You may find challenging positions in day-care or preschool facilities; group homes and halfway houses; correctional, mental retardation, and community mental health agencies; crisis interventions units; family, child, and youth agencies; and programs concerned with alcoholism, drug abuse, family violence, and aging.

About half of the students who graduate from the Human Services program go right on to graduate school. Graduates have been accepted at Simmons College, Columbia University, and the University of Pennsylvania, among many others. Many pursue a Master in Social Work (MSW), leading to many additional job opportunities. Others proceed with graduate study in school counseling, school psychology, clinical psychology, substance abuse, or marriage and family therapy.
